A room that
argues back.
Mahoneys Galleries is a commercial gallery and a working framing bench under one roof. We buy what we believe in, hang it properly, and stand behind it long after it leaves the wall.
Our story
Two floors in the
city. Then one very
long room by the bay.
We started in Hardware Lane with two floors, a lift that rarely worked, and a stubborn belief that Australian painting deserved better lighting than it was getting.
Twenty-eight years later we moved to Bay Street, into a single room long enough to hang a whole show in one sweep. You can stand at the door and see every work at once — which is a hard test for a gallery, and exactly the point.
The framing bench came with us. It always will. Half of what we do is choosing the right work; the other half is making sure it survives the next fifty years on someone's wall.
How we work
Three rules we have never broken.
Show fewer, show better
Eight artists, four exhibitions a year. Nothing goes on the wall to fill a gap, and nothing stays up past its welcome.
Price it honestly
Every price is on the label and on the website. No "on application", no quiet mark-ups when a work starts moving.
Frame it to last
Conservation glass, acid-free everything, joined by hand at the back of the room. We will happily talk you out of the fancier option.
The people
Ask for either of us
at the desk.
There is always someone in the room who can talk about the work — not just take payment for it.

The framing bench

Opening night crew
“A commercial gallery that behaves like a public one. The framing workshop out the back is the tell.”
The Frame · June 2026
Come in on a Tuesday morning when it is quiet. Nobody will follow you around, and you can sit on the bench in the middle of the room for as long as you like.
